Michael Temporal, MD Named MMA Board President as Association Builds Toward 150 Years of Montana Medicine
Billings family physician and geriatrician will help lead MMA’s next chapter of physician engagement, advocacy,
education and service to Montana communities.
HELENA, Mont. Billings family physician and geriatrician Michael Temporal, MD, has been named Board President of
the Montana Medical Association (MMA) for 2026-2027.
Dr. Temporal brings more than 30 years of experience in clinical practice, medical education, organizational leadership
and community service. His roles in organized medicine have included serving as a Yellowstone Valley Medical Society
trustee and as an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association.
His background in family medicine, geriatrics and organized medicine brings a broad perspective on patients’ needs
and the challenges facing physicians. He will work with MMA’s Board of Trustees and chief executive officer to expand
physician engagement, education and physician-led innovation, strengthening the profession’s role in shaping Montana
health care.
Dr. Temporal emphasizes the responsibility physicians have to lead care, advocate for patients and remain engaged in
the future of medicine. “We are rooted in evidence-based medicine and are able to look at the big picture to navigate
and advocate for a comprehensive and coordinated health system,” Dr. Temporal said.
His term begins as MMA advances Legacy 150, a commitment marking the association’s 150th anniversary in 2029.
Founded in 1879, 10 years before Montana became a state, MMA is honoring physicians’ contributions, strengthening
the profession and investing in the future of medicine and Montana communities. That work builds on the trust and
credibility MMA has earned through its longstanding representation of Montana physicians.
The commitment to care for people connects physicians across specialties and generations. It is expressed in
relationships with patients, the knowledge physicians bring to difficult diagnoses and the care they provide through
life’s most significant moments.
MMA extends that commitment through advocacy, education, mentorship and community partnerships. Its work
supports physicians caring for patients throughout their health care journey, from prevention and diagnosis to
treatment, chronic disease management and care later in life.
Connecting physicians across practice settings and geographic regions helps them share knowledge, address
challenges and bring patient needs into decisions affecting access to care, safety and Montana’s health care workforce.
Guided by Our Legacy. Our Commitment. Our Future., Legacy 150 preserves physician history, strengthens MMA’s
representation of the profession, transforms the MMA Foundation and advances initiatives serving physicians,
communities and the future workforce. Its message, Serving Communities. Advancing Medicine., connects that history
with investment beyond 2029.
“A strong medical association turns the knowledge and commitment of individual physicians into collective action for
Montana,” said Leeann Sherman (CAE), chief executive officer of the Montana Medical Association. “Dr. Temporal’s
board leadership comes as we build a more engaged and visible MMA, with valuable education, stronger advocacy and
expanded partnerships and community service. Legacy 150 carries that work forward, connecting the contributions of
generations of physicians with lasting investment in the people and communities they serve.”
MMA also advances its commitment to patients and communities through the Montana Medical Association
Foundation, its charitable and educational arm. The Foundation supports medical student scholarships and gives
physicians, donors and partners a way to invest in Montana’s health care future.
Through Legacy 150, MMA is expanding that work to support education, research, innovation and community health,
connecting philanthropy with the needs of future physicians and the people they will serve.
Physicians, donors and partners will help carry forward a legacy measured in people cared for, communities
strengthened and future physicians prepared to serve.
